Shawn Layden slams Xbox strategy, defends single‑player games

Former PlayStation chief Shawn Layden said Microsoft’s Xbox division shows a “fundamental misunderstanding” of the gaming business. In a LinkedIn comment he argued the unit must choose one path – either become the world’s biggest games publisher, leveraging its acquisitions of Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, or act as a traditional console platform that relies on exclusive titles. He warned that the two approaches “cannot run together” and that exclusives are essential for a successful platform, citing PlayStation’s own franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Astro Bot, Kratos, and Horizon.

In the same interview Layden championed story‑driven single‑player games, calling them “the DNA of gaming” and insisting they will “stay”. He criticized Sony’s recent move to limit PC ports of its blockbusters and to focus on live‑service and multiplayer titles, arguing that classic single‑player experiences remain the industry’s core and the basis for enduring success.
