Shawn Layden urges Microsoft to define Xbox strategy

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has criticized Microsoft’s inconsistent strategy regarding Xbox exclusive content. Speaking on 'The Expansion Pass' podcast, Layden argued that Microsoft must decide whether it wants to function as a hardware platform or as a global third-party publisher.

Layden noted that a platform requires exclusive titles to maintain meaning, whereas a major publisher—especially following the acquisition of Activision and Blizzard—must be present on all available platforms to succeed. He suggested that attempting to achieve both goals simultaneously is unsustainable, comparing Microsoft’s current predicament to Sega’s ‘Dreamcast moment’ when the company transitioned from console manufacturing to third-party publishing.

This critique follows a period of shifting direction under Xbox leadership, where titles such as Starfield and Halo: Campaign Evolved were released on competing consoles like the PlayStation 5. While Layden acknowledged recent efforts by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma to restructure the company, he expressed uncertainty regarding the long-term direction of the brand.
