Shedd Aquarium receives four more belugas from Canadian Marineland

Four beluga whales—Caspian, Peekachu, Rain, and Secord—have arrived at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. This marks the second group of belugas transferred from Marineland, a shuttered theme park in Ontario, Canada, following an initial group that arrived in July.

The relocation is part of a government-approved rescue plan to move Canada’s last remaining captive whales to facilities in the United States and Spain. The plan aims to prevent potential mass euthanasia for the animals. In total, 30 whales and four dolphins are scheduled for transport from the facility, which closed to the public in late summer 2024.

Data from provincial government records indicates that 20 whales, including 19 belugas and one killer whale, have died at Marineland since 2019. To facilitate the international transfer, experts utilized custom-built slings and temperature-controlled containers. The new arrivals are currently being monitored closely as they adjust to their new environment and interact with existing belugas at the aquarium.
