Shedd Aquarium reports death of beluga whale relocated from Marineland

Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga whale, has died at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The death occurred on Wednesday despite veterinary efforts, including nearly four hours on life support.

Caspian was one of the animals relocated from the closed Marineland theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, following the park's announcement that it could no longer afford to care for its captive marine life. Her death marks the sixth animal to die following the mass relocation of 30 belugas and four dolphins that took place over the summer.

According to the Shedd Aquarium, Caspian had not been eating properly, and blood tests revealed electrolyte abnormalities and dangerously acidic blood levels. While these findings indicated her declining health, they did not establish a definitive cause of death. Other animals from the Marineland relocation, including a beluga and a dolphin at Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, have also died.
