Several beluga whales have died at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago following a large-scale international rescue effort to relocate animals from the shuttered Marineland park in Ontario, Canada.

Recent deaths include Peekachu, a 23-year-old female who died while caretakers attempted to treat her for dehydration. Additionally, the aquarium reported the passing of Rain, a 20-year-old female rescue, and Beethoven, a 34-year-old male resident of the aquarium.

The relocation project aims to re-home 30 beluga whales and four dolphins from Marineland to various facilities, including the Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld, and locations in San Antonio, San Diego, and Spain. Since 2019, provincial data indicates that 20 whales have died at the Marineland complex.
