Shedd Aquarium reports health issues in transferred Marineland belugas
The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has reported that several beluga whales transferred from Ontario’s Marineland are experiencing health issues. The institution is providing round-the-clock supervision, monitoring the animals' hydration, breathing rates, and social behaviors as they adjust to their new environment.
The health concerns follow the deaths of three whales in a short period. Two of the deceased, a 20-year-old named Rain and a beluga named Peekachu, were recently relocated from Marineland. A 34-year-old resident beluga, Beethoven, also died during this period. The aquarium stated that while some rescued whales show encouraging signs, none are currently in the desired health condition.
The whales were part of a massive relocation effort involving 30 belugas and four dolphins moved from the shuttered Marineland theme park in Niagara Falls, Canada, to a consortium of five aquariums in the United States and Spain. The move was intended to prevent the euthanasia of the animals following Marineland's financial collapse. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson had provided final approval for the transfers after the animals were given a clean bill of health prior to relocation.
