PTI long march intensifies as PM Shehbaz offers conditional talks

Pakistan's political standoff between the federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has intensified as the party's long march entered its fourth day. Led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, the convoy has altered its route to include a stop in Khyber before proceeding to Peshawar. The PTI maintains that the decision to end the protest rests solely with jailed founder Imran Khan, and party Chairman Gohar Ali Khan dismissed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer for negotiations as ‘merely symbolic.’

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has renewed an offer for dialogue, conditional upon the PTI ending its long march and sit-ins. The Prime Minister warned that prolonged political agitation could harm the national economy, specifically impacting exports, manufacturing, and imports. He highlighted that the government has achieved macroeconomic stability over the last two and a half years.

Disagreements also persist regarding security strategy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. While the federal government calls for stronger counterterrorism measures, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has criticized existing policies and stated that no further military operations will be allowed in the province, arguing that current approaches have failed to bring peace and have caused displacement.
