Sheikh Ahmad Gumi outlines Islamic law options for women in abusive marriages

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that Islamic law provides several avenues for women to leave abusive or harmful marriages. In a message from Kaduna, Gumi outlined options including mutual consent divorce, khul‘ (where a woman initiates divorce by returning her dower), judicial annulment (faskh) for grounds such as physical or emotional abuse, and delegated divorce (talaq al-tafwid).

In a related development, lawyer Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi of the Women Aware of Rights Initiative has denied allegations that Khadija Diab is staying with Sheikh Gumi. Diab, who fled to Morocco in April following allegations of domestic abuse and inadequate maintenance by her husband, Nasiru Idris Musa, is currently with her family. Chedi clarified that Diab’s legal case regarding her marital situation was instituted at the Area Sharia Court in Kaduna.
