Shein faces criticism over environmental and labor impacts

Shein, the Chinese ultra-fast fashion giant, is facing intense criticism regarding its environmental and social impact. The company’s business model, which can bring new designs to market in as little as three to seven days, has been identified as a major driver of the ‘buy-and-throw-away’ cycle.

Environmental concerns include high CO2 emissions, microplastic generation, and massive water consumption. A 2023 Greenpeace report highlighted the presence of prohibited toxic substances in some of Shein’s products within the EU. While Shein has acknowledged chemical contamination and pledged to implement ‘substantial improvements’ in product management, the company remains under scrutiny.

Beyond environmental issues, the retailer faces allegations regarding human rights and labor practices. A 2022 report by the British broadcaster Channel 4 claimed that workers faced shifts of up to 18 hours a day for low wages.
