Shein faces safety warnings and steep tariffs on EU and US markets

A test by Denmark's consumer watchdog Forbrugerrådet Tænk found that sunscreen sold through overseas online platforms such as Shein, Temu and AliExpress often fails to deliver the advertised protection. Of seven SPF 50+ creams examined, only one met the label claim; four showed practically no UV protection, and three contained a UV filter banned in the EU for its hormone‑disrupting properties. Project leader Stine Müller warned that consumers could suffer serious skin damage if they rely on these products and urged shoppers to buy sunscreens from reputable brands sold within the Danish market.

At the same time, new customs duties introduced by the United States and a fixed import fee imposed by the European Union on low‑value parcels have hit Shein hard. The company reported a quarterly loss of 668 million kroner, a sharp swing from a profit of 2.67 billion kroner a year earlier. Shein says the higher tariffs and fees will force it to raise prices for customers in both the US and Europe, potentially reshaping the low‑cost online fashion market.
