Shen Po-yang gains momentum in Taipei mayoral race
Democratic Progressive Party Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang has seen a surge in political momentum, referred to by supporters as the ‘Yangliu’ (ocean current) phenomenon. This surge has been characterized by high engagement during his visits to local night markets in Taoyuan and Kaohsiung, as well as significant increases in digital search interest following a high-profile interview.
Shen has actively engaged in cross-city exchanges, visiting Kaohsiung to discuss urban governance, such as sports hubs and concert economies, and Taoyuan to support candidate Huang Shih-chieh. He has also repeatedly called for a direct debate with incumbent Mayor Chiang Wan-an to discuss urban visions, a challenge Chiang has expressed willingness to accept given the appropriate format.
Amidst this rising visibility, controversies have emerged. The Taipei City Government clarified that it has not banned campaign materials in markets, responding to allegations that vendors received warnings for displaying Shen’s literature. Additionally, political opponents have debated whether Shen’s momentum is a genuine shift in voter interest or a temporary digital trend driven by media exposure.
