Shenzhen prepares for 2026 APEC Summit as SME leaders meet in China
Shenzhen is preparing to host the APEC Summit in November 2026, an event expected to enhance the city's global recognition, urban governance, and technological innovation capabilities. In the first half of 2026, trade between Shenzhen and APEC economies reached 1.98 trillion yuan (approximately $292 billion), representing 68.8% of the city's total foreign trade.
At the 32nd APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting (SMEMM 32) held in Guangzhou, discussions focused on digital transformation and technological innovation to bolster the resilience of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Vietnam's Deputy Minister Nguyen Duc Chi proposed three priorities to help SMEs access technology, improve skills, and enhance connectivity to ensure they are not left behind during the digital transition.
SMEs are considered a pillar of APEC economies, accounting for over 97% of all businesses and contributing more than half of private sector employment in the region. The meetings emphasize using innovation and digital tools to drive sustainable growth and competitive advantages for businesses across the Asia-Pacific.
