Sherry wine sales decline amid shifting global consumption trends

Sherry wine sales have experienced a decline in volume, with total sales reaching 22.3 million liters in the year ending August, a 6.4% decrease compared to the previous year. This downturn is primarily driven by a 10.7% drop in exports, which fell from 12.8 million to 11.41 million liters.

Significant market contractions were noted in the Netherlands, where purchases plummeted by over 38%, and in Germany. Despite the volume loss, the industry is seeing a shift toward premium segments. As noted by Ana Rosa García Márquez, the new Director General of the Sherry and Manzanilla de Sanlúcar Regulatory Council, the trend reflects a move toward selling “less wine, but better,” as higher average prices help compensate for lower sales volumes.

While international markets have struggled, the Spanish domestic market remains relatively stable, recording only a 1.4% decrease in sales.
