Shillong violence: KSU rally leads to vehicle arson and statue vandalism
A black-flag bike rally organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong turned violent on August 19, resulting in significant property damage and injuries. Protesters targeted government and private vehicles, including several Assam-registered cars and a vehicle belonging to the National Informatics Centre. At least 31 vehicles were damaged, two were set ablaze, and 16 people were reported injured. The unrest also included the vandalism of statues of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda.
In response to the violence, the East Khasi Hills administration revoked the KSU’s permission for subsequent protests and is seeking financial compensation for damages under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act. Three top KSU leaders—Raymond Kharjana, Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, and Reuben Najiar—were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The Meghalaya High Court has also intervened, ordering authorities to swiftly apprehend those responsible and demanding a progress report by August 24.
The violence has had significant economic and social repercussions. Approximately 12,000 tourists have been affected, with nearly 2,000 stranded in hotels. The Assam government has issued helpline numbers to assist stranded citizens and is coordinating with Meghalaya authorities to restore normalcy. Additionally, the Meghalaya government has tightened security protocols for all official vehicles to prevent further arson or vandalism.
