Shingrix vaccine may reduce dementia and heart disease risks
A study published in Nature Medicine suggests that the Shingrix vaccine, primarily used to prevent shingles (herpes zoster), may also significantly reduce the risk of dementia and cardiovascular diseases.
Researchers from the University of Oxford analyzed data from more than 70,000 adults aged 60 and older in the United States. The study tracked individuals who transitioned from the older Zostavax vaccine to the newer Shingrix vaccine starting in October 2017 over a seven-year period.
The findings indicate that Shingrix recipients experienced a 10 percent reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease and a 12 percent reduction in the risk of heart failure for both men and women. The vaccine, which utilizes a recombinant glycoprotein, maintains an efficacy rate of over 90 percent in preventing shingles outbreaks in older populations.
