Shipwreck near Girne leaves 14 dead and 14 missing

A maritime disaster near Girne, North Cyprus, has resulted in at least 14 deaths, with search operations continuing for 14 other missing individuals following the sinking of a vessel carrying 267 passengers and crew on August 30.

Survivors from the Kaya family, who were traveling from North Cyprus to Turkey, described the chaos. Eleven-year-old Fatma Ada Kaya reported that the ship overturned as she jumped into the sea. After being rescued and initially discharged from a hospital in North Cyprus with pain medication, she was later hospitalized in Adana, Turkey, where doctors discovered four fractured ribs.

The incident has sparked significant political tension. Following the tragedy, Erhan Arıklı faced criticism for characterizing the fallout as a ‘political conspiracy’ and an ‘influence operation’ rather than addressing the loss of life. Critics have condemned these remarks as disrespectful to the grieving families who are still searching for news of their loved ones.
