Shiva worship and fasting rituals observed during India's Sawan month

Special observances for the Hindu month of Sawan are scheduled for August 2026. On 17 August, the third Monday of Sawan, Shiva will be presented in the Ardhanarishvara form, symbolising the unity of Shiva and Parvati. A week later, on 24 August, the fourth Monday, a grand Rudraksha adornment of Shiva will be performed, accompanied by elaborate puja, abhishek and aarti. Devotees expect the rituals to bring balance, love and family happiness, and large crowds are anticipated at temples.

Fasting during Sawan is also highlighted for its perceived benefits. Practitioners believe the fast deepens devotion to Shiva, purifies the soul, and promotes physical health through sattvic diet. It is said to develop self‑control, patience and social respect, strengthening family and community bonds.
