Shiva worship rituals highlighted during the Sawan month

During the Hindu month of Sawan, devotees perform the Rudrabhishek ceremony, an elaborate anointment of Lord Shiva using sacred substances such as water, milk, honey and Panchamrit. A special vessel called a shringi, shaped like a horn, is traditionally used to pour the offerings onto the Shiva lingam, symbolising a continuous stream of devotion.

The upcoming Sawan Kalashtami, observed on 5‑6 August 2026, is dedicated to Lord Kal Bhairav, an austere aspect of Shiva. Rituals for the day include bathing, fasting, and offering mustard oil, black sesame, udad beans, coconut, lemon, vermilion and flowers. Devotees chant specific mantras, light oil lamps, and recite the Kal Bhairav Aṣṭaka, seeking protection from fear, obstacles and negative influences.
