France shooting investigation targets racist terrorist motive

A shooting spree across the suburban towns of Trappes and La Verrière in the Yvelines department has left one person dead and five others injured. The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi. Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl who was struck by eight bullets and remains in critical condition.

The suspect, 39-year-old Kevin T., was arrested in Coignières by the anti-crime brigade. Authorities recovered a Sten submachine gun, tear gas canisters, and cocaine from his possession. During a search of his residence in Plaisir, investigators discovered a booby trap consisting of gas canisters and wires connected to a timer.

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has taken over the investigation, treating the incident as a terrorist crime. President Emmanuel Macron described the event as a “racist terrorist attack” and a “turning point” for the Republic, noting that victims appeared to be targeted based on their skin color or perceived religion. Local officials, including the Mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, characterized the attack as potentially Islamophobic.
