Shopping Sol in Sintra closed due to hygiene and safety risks
The Shopping Sol commercial center in Algueirão-Mem Martins, Sintra, has been immediately closed following a joint inspection by the Public Security Police (PSP) and municipal authorities. The operation was launched following reports that commercial units were being used for residential purposes.
Inspectors identified widespread degradation, including the accumulation of debris, inadequate lighting and ventilation, intense odors, and conditions conducive to pest infestation. Significant fire risks were also noted, specifically the storage of gas canisters near flammable products and obstructed access routes. Additionally, one operating business was found to be functioning without the required license.
During the inspection, authorities discovered two individuals living overnight inside the building in conditions deemed incompatible with minimum habitability and safety standards. A 71-year-old man was found in a fragile physical state with visible wounds and was transported to Professor Doctor Fernando Fonseca Hospital for medical evaluation following suspected dehydration.
