Shopping Sol closure in Sintra

Overview

Authorities closed the Shopping Sol commercial center in the Algueirão-Mem Martins area of Sintra following a joint inspection by the Public Security Police (PSP) and municipal agencies. The intervention was prompted by reports that commercial units were being used for residential purposes.

Inspectors identified severe hygiene, health, and safety risks, including inadequate lighting, poor ventilation, intense odors, debris accumulation, and pest infestation risks. Significant fire hazards were also documented, such as the storage of gas canisters near flammable materials and obstructed access routes. One business was also found to be operating without a license.

During the operation, authorities discovered two individuals living in conditions deemed incompatible with minimum habitability standards. This included a 71-year-old man found in a fragile physical state with visible wounds, who was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation due to suspected dehydration. The second individual, a woman, was referred to social services. The involved parties have been directed toward social assistance and housing support.
