Shoprite to acquire Vida e Caffè coffee chain
Shoprite has agreed to acquire 100% of Vida e Caffè, South Africa’s largest coffee chain, to expand its presence in the coffee and quick-service restaurant sectors. The deal, signed on August 20, 2026, includes Vida’s approximately 400 company-owned and franchised outlets across seven African markets: South Africa, Ghana, Mauritius, Zambia, Eswatini, Botswana, and Angola.
The acquisition represents a strategic shift for Shoprite, focusing on specialist brands rather than rebuilding its supermarket network, which has recently seen pullbacks in several African nations. By acquiring Vida, Shoprite gains exposure to markets like Ghana and Mauritius where it no longer operates supermarkets.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed during Shoprite’s 2027 financial year. While the purchase price was not disclosed, the move follows Shoprite’s recent acquisition of a 51% stake in R&A Cellular.
