Shoprite Holdings strategic acquisitions
Overview
Shoprite Holdings has initiated a strategic expansion through targeted acquisitions in the financial services and quick-service restaurant sectors.
The retailer first acquired a 51% stake in R&A Cellular, an eMalahleni-based provider of point-of-sale devices for informal spaza shops. This move is intended to integrate Shoprite’s financial services, such as Money Market, into the informal retail ecosystem.
Following this, Shoprite agreed to acquire 100% of Vida e Caffè, South Africa’s largest coffee chain. The deal includes approximately 400 company-owned and franchised outlets across seven African markets: South Africa, Ghana, Mauritius, Zambia, Eswatini, Botswana, and Angola. This acquisition allows Shoprite to maintain a presence in markets like Ghana and Mauritius where it no longer operates supermarkets. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed during the 2027 financial year.
