Short-form video consumption linked to impaired cognitive control
Research and clinical observations suggest that short-form video content, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, may negatively impact brain development and cognitive function in young viewers.
A study published in the journal NeuroImage involving 56 young people found that watching short videos can suppress brain regions responsible for self-control and decision-making. Specifically, the research noted deactivation in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), which is linked to cognitive control and conflict detection, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which is associated with logic, focus, and planning.
Dr. Allison Hensley, a pediatrician at Loma Linda University Children’s Health, warned that the rapid-fire pacing of algorithmic feeds creates a dopamine-driven reward loop similar to substance abuse. This mechanism provides immediate, low-effort euphoria that may hinder a child's ability to maintain focus, patience, and deep learning, potentially leading to long-term psychological and cognitive consequences.
