Sicilian associations oppose Palermo and Catania incinerator projects
Several environmental and consumer associations, including Legambiente Sicilia, WWF Sicilia, and Federconsumatori Sicilia, have filed formal objections regarding proposed waste-to-energy plants in Palermo and Catania. The organizations argue that the projects, promoted by the Schifani government to achieve waste self-sufficiency in Sicily, present severe environmental, health, and legal risks.
In Catania, critics highlight that the Pantano d’Arci site is located too close to industrial areas and large commercial complexes, potentially exposing residents to particulate matter. In Palermo, the Bellolampo area is noted for being already environmentally compromised by existing landfills. The associations claim the documentation fails to address the cumulative impact of these facilities and violates guidelines regarding isolation from sensitive receptors.
Furthermore, the groups have raised concerns about the legality of the authorization process, specifically noting that project approval in the Service Conference occurred before the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA). They also question the compatibility of these incinerators with European Union circular economy goals and the potential for increased costs to citizens.
