Environmental and health crises in Sicily

Overview

Environmental and health concerns have intensified across Sicily regarding industrial activities and waste management. In the petrochemical hub spanning Priolo, Melilli, and Augusta, residents and groups like Legambiente have reported significant ecological damage and public health risks. Data from the NOSE application indicated that 92 percent of nearly 6,000 olfactory disturbance reports in 2025 originated from this specific area. Legal disputes also persist over the IAS purifier in Priolo, which has remained operational despite a 2022 judicial seizure related to charges of environmental disaster.

Opposition has solidified regarding proposed waste-to-energy incinerator projects in Palermo and Catania. Environmental and consumer associations, including Legambiente Sicilia, WWF Sicilia, and Federconsumatori Sicilia, have filed formal objections. In Catania, critics argue the Pantano d’Arci site is too close to industrial and commercial zones, risking particulate matter exposure. In Palermo, the Bellolampo area is noted as already environmentally compromised by existing landfills. These groups claim the authorization process may be illegal, noting that project approval occurred before the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA), and argue the plants conflict with European Union circular economy goals.

In October 2026, Sicily’s Technical Specialist Commission for Environmental Authorizations (CTS) issued a favorable technical opinion for both projects, a move Sicilian President Renato Schifani described as vital for modernizing waste management. While this advances the projects toward regional authorization, the Palermo Health Protection Agency (ASP) has requested further investigations. The ASP emphasized the need for detailed studies on how emissions might affect vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, and requested assessments regarding soil, water, and food chain contamination.
