Sicilian environmental groups seek delay on Palermo and Catania waste-to-energy projects

Fifteen environmental and social organizations in Sicily have formally requested an extension of the deadline to submit observations regarding proposed waste-to-energy plants in Palermo and Catania. The groups also requested the postponement of a hearing scheduled for August 24.

The request, addressed to the Regional Department of the Environment, follows the submission of over 184 supplementary documents by the Sicilian Region’s special office for energy valorization and waste management. The associations argue that the 15-day window provided for public consultation is insufficient to analyze the technical complexity and volume of the documentation, especially as the period coincides with summer holidays.

Opponents of the projects have raised concerns regarding environmental, health, and technical issues, arguing that the incinerators contradict circular economy principles and pose risks to public health. The organizations are also seeking clarification on whether the new project integrations are substantial and are awaiting a response regarding a request for a public inquiry submitted in July.
