In addition to composting, the region is pursuing energy efficiency and urban redevelopment, such as public lighting upgrades in Enna. In Gela, Eni has received authorization for a biorefinery project to treat acid waters and regenerate bleaching earths.

These developments face significant opposition. Fifteen environmental and social organizations have formally requested an extension to the public consultation deadline and a postponement of a scheduled hearing regarding proposed waste-to-energy plants in Palermo and Catania. The groups argue that the 15-day window provided to review over 184 supplementary documents is insufficient due to the technical complexity and the summer holiday period. Opponents maintain that these incinerators pose risks to public health and contradict circular economy principles, potentially creating a “lock-in” effect that discourages long-term recycling and reuse efforts.
