Sicily advances waste management and energy projects

Sicily is implementing several environmental and energy initiatives. The regional department for Water and Waste has approved a provisional ranking for local composting projects, allocating nearly 11.5 million euros to 28 eligible municipalities to support organic waste management and the circular economy.

In a separate development, Eni has received municipal authorization in Gela for a project to regenerate exhausted bleaching earths and treat acid waters. This biorefinery initiative aims to reduce waste production and environmental impact by reusing materials within the production cycle.

Additionally, the province of Enna is a major beneficiary of regional funds for energy efficiency and urban redevelopment, with six municipalities receiving approximately 8.4 million euros for projects ranging from public lighting upgrades to urban regeneration.

However, waste management plans face opposition. Environmental groups, including Rifiuti Zero Sicilia and LIPU, have filed technical observations to block two proposed large-scale incinerators in Palermo and Catania. The groups argue these plants could create a “lock-in” effect, discouraging recycling and reuse efforts for decades.
