Sicily allocates €18 million for doctoral scholarships 2026‑27
The Sicilian regional government approved a total of €18 million in scholarships for doctoral research programmes for the 2026‑2027 academic year. The funding comes from the regional FSE+ 2021‑2027 programme and is detailed in a decree issued by the Regional Department of Education and Vocational Training.
The scheme splits the money into €10 million for the enhancement of high‑training pathways (priority 2) and €8 million for the new “6‑Step” priority, aimed at promoting advanced training and research in high‑technology sectors. Eligible universities are those operating within Sicily, while the scholarships target graduates who were born or reside on the island.
President of the Region, Renato Schifani, said the goal is “to build a system where universities, academic training, professional training and businesses collaborate steadily, so our young talents can study in Sicily and stay here after graduation.” Regional education assessor Mimmo Turano added that the region has already allocated €45 million to doctoral programmes and that the new decree “allows us to finance the scholarships for the 2026‑2027 doctoral cohort.”
Applications must be submitted online between 09:00 on 22 June and 23:59 on 14 July 2026 via the platform announced in the decree.
