Sicily regional budget allocations spark legal challenges
The Sicilian Regional Assembly’s recent budget variations have triggered a legal challenge aimed at the Constitutional Court. The group Controcorrente, alongside the mayors of Agrigento and Itala, has filed a formal complaint requesting the annulment of Article 122 of the budget variation. This article establishes the Territorial Intervention Fund (Fit), a 190 million euro fund for 2026.
Critics argue the fund lacks transparency, alleging that 174.3 million euros were allocated through specific lists and attachments rather than through public selection processes or predefined parameters. The complainants claim this violates constitutional principles of equality and administrative impartiality, suggesting that funds may be distributed based on political affiliation rather than territorial need. Notably, several municipalities governed by opposition parties, including Agrigento, Trapani, and Caltagirone, were excluded from the allocations.
Despite the controversy, the budget includes significant funding for various regions. In the Nebrodi area, 5.8 million euros have been earmarked for 33 municipalities to support urban redevelopment, school maintenance, and sports facilities. In the province of Agrigento, Ribera and Canicattì are among the primary beneficiaries, with Ribera receiving over 2.2 million euros for projects including a new municipal swimming pool.
