Sicily allocates one million euros to revitalize fishing villages
The Sicilian Region has announced one million euros in funding for 2026 to support the recovery and enhancement of Mediterranean fishing villages. Managed by the Department of Mediterranean Fisheries, the initiative aims to preserve the historical identity and maritime traditions of coastal communities, transforming cultural heritage into drivers for tourism and economic growth.
Eligible recipients include municipalities, public entities, associations, and foundations involved in territories listed in the Register of Mediterranean Fishing Identities and Fishing Villages (Reimar). Funding can be applied to the restoration of buildings, public spaces, and port areas, as well as the development of museums, exhibition spaces, and educational paths. Each project is eligible for a maximum contribution of 250,000 euros.
In a related effort to promote local identity, the G.I.U.B.I.L.E.O. project, supported by the Regional Department of Agriculture, is continuing its tour of Sicilian traditions. The initiative focuses on combining spiritual heritage, such as visits to historic churches, with local enogastronomic excellence to strengthen community belonging and regional tourism.
