Sicily approves 11.5 million euros for local composting projects
The Sicily Region has approved a provisional ranking of projects aimed at supporting local organic waste composting. Funded through the FESR Sicilia 2021-2027 program, the initiative seeks to promote a circular economy and meet European Union waste management goals.
Out of a total budget of 15 million euros, nearly 11.5 million euros have been allocated to 28 eligible projects. The distribution of these funds is concentrated in several provinces: 12 projects in Messina, 8 in Palermo, 2 in Catania, 2 in Syracuse, 2 in Enna, and 2 in Agrigento. Notably, no municipalities from the Trapani province were included in this funding round.
Regional Councilor for Energy and Public Utility Services, Francesco Colianni, stated that local composting is one of the most effective ways to reduce organic waste. Once the mandatory procedure periods have passed, the funds will be disbursed to begin the projects.
