Sicily debates location for fourth university polyclinic
A debate has emerged regarding the location of Sicily’s fourth university polyclinic, with discussions centering on whether the facility should be established in Enna or Caltanissetta. The project is viewed as a significant opportunity for healthcare, academic, and economic development in central Sicily, potentially impacting medical research, youth training, and local employment for decades.
Leonardo Burgio, representing the Lega party in Caltanissetta, has advocated for the Caltanissetta location, citing existing infrastructure such as the Sant’Elia hospital, the Cefpas training center, and the university hub connected to the University of Palermo. Burgio emphasized that the decision must be based on a comprehensive strategic plan rather than isolated financial allocations. He noted that regional law no. 2 of 2023, which outlines the procedures for establishing the polyclinic, does not pre-assign the site to Enna or any other specific city.
