Sicily university polyclinic location debate

Overview

A debate has emerged in central Sicily regarding the establishment of the region’s fourth university polyclinic, with discussions focusing on whether the facility should be located in Caltanissetta or Enna. The project is considered a major opportunity for healthcare, academic research, and economic development.

Local officials in Caltanissetta, including Mayor Walter Tesauro and University Consortium President Gianluca Tumminelli, have clarified that recent parliamentary funding for the ASP of Enna does not constitute the establishment of a polyclinic there. Tesauro argued that Caltanissetta holds the necessary status as a Level II Emergency and Acceptance Department, a requirement he claims Enna lacks.

Leonardo Burgio of the Lega party has also advocated for Caltanissetta, citing existing infrastructure such as the Sant’Elia hospital, the Cefpas training center, and the university hub. Burgio noted that regional law no. 2 of 2023, which governs the polyclinic’s establishment, does not pre-assign the site to any specific city.
