Sicily earmarks €4.2 million for cancer screenings and Arpa Siracusa upgrades

Regional deputy Carlo Auteri announced that the 2026 Sicily budget includes €2.2 million for municipalities hosting industrial zones that have started cancer‑screening programmes, and an additional €2 million to strengthen the regional environmental agency Arpa Siracusa. The funding will support expanded oncological investigations, monitoring of health in exposed populations, and the hiring of specialised technicians, acquisition of equipment and vehicles for intensified environmental inspections.

Auteri said the measures stem from on‑site inspections carried out in 2024, which revealed critical organisational and staffing gaps at Arpa Siracusa. He stressed that “the protection of citizens’ health is built not with slogans but with concrete programming that listens to the territory.” The combined financing aims to link environmental control with preventive health care for communities living near industrial poles.

The allocations were inserted through an amendment to the regional finance law, reflecting a policy that couples environmental monitoring with public‑health prevention in the Siracusa area.
