Sicily expands solar energy through agrivoltaics and corporate investments

Sicily is becoming a central hub for large-scale solar energy projects, including significant investments in agrivoltaics and corporate decarbonization efforts.

A new 225-megawatt solar development is being constructed near Vizzini. This project utilizes agrivoltaics, where photovoltaic arrays are elevated 4.3 feet above the ground to allow for sheep grazing and crop cultivation beneath the panels. The 642-acre site, developed by Sun Project with financing arranged by European Energy, is expected to generate approximately 405 gigawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity annually, powering more than 135,000 households. Full commercial operations are targeted for late 2027 or 2028.

Additionally, Amazon is utilizing Sicily as a primary location for its decarbonization strategy in Italy. Of the eight photovoltaic plants the company has implemented in the country, seven are located on the island. These initiatives are part of Amazon's broader goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Recent developments include installations in the Belice Valley near Gibellina.
