Sicilian agricultural and energy sector development

Overview

Sicily is strengthening its economic role through both traditional agriculture and renewable energy development.

Reports indicate the island has become Italy’s third-largest agricultural region and the leader in Southern Italy. In 2025, the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors generated approximately 4.5 billion euros in added value, representing 9.6% of Italy’s national total. The region also maintains a notable wine industry, particularly in the Etna DOC area.

Parallel to its agricultural output, Sicily is expanding its solar energy capacity. Large-scale projects are emerging, such as a 225-megawatt agrivoltaic development near Vizzini designed to allow for simultaneous crop cultivation and sheep grazing. Furthermore, the island has become a focal point for corporate decarbonization, with Amazon locating seven of its eight Italian photovoltaic plants on the island to support its net-zero goals.
