Sicily extends airfare discounts and addresses regional flight connectivity

The Sicilian Region has extended airfare discount measures for residents until November 30 to combat high flight costs. The initiative aims to mitigate the disadvantages of island living by providing subsidized domestic air travel. The regional government has allocated 13.5 million euros annually for the 2026, 2027, and 2028 fiscal years to reimburse participating airlines.

New developments include an agreement with Wizz Air to allow residents to apply discounts directly during the booking process, and the potential introduction of new routes by Aeroitalia.

In a separate regional transport issue, the Alghero-Milan Linate route faced a lack of bidders in a recent tender. However, the regional government confirmed that the connection will remain active until January 31 through an extension with Ita Airways. A new tender process is being prepared to address the long-term service requirements for this essential link.
