Sicily faces extreme heat as temperatures surge to 37°C

An African-origin anticyclone is dominating the central Mediterranean, pushing Sicily's temperatures well above seasonal averages. Forecasts for the week of 15 June show highs of 28‑34 °C with peaks of 36‑37 °C in inland areas such as Siracusa and the lower Catania region. The heat is expected to persist, with only a brief interruption on 16 June when an Atlantic disturbance may bring isolated showers to mountainous zones.

To protect public health, regional authorities have ordered a ban on outdoor work between 12:30 and 16:00 for sectors most exposed to the heat, including agriculture, construction, quarries, logistics and home‑delivery services. The measure aims to reduce the risk of heat‑related illnesses among workers during the hottest part of the day.

Health officials warn of increased heat‑stress risk and advise the public to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, and monitor vulnerable groups.
