Sicily faces highest number of municipal financial crises in Italy

Sicily has been identified as the Italian region most affected by the financial crisis of local authorities. According to a report by the Unimpresa Study Center, based on data from the Court of Auditors, there are currently 110 active insolvency and financial rebalancing procedures in the region.

These 110 procedures account for 22.7% of the 485 total cases recorded across Italy at the end of 2025, placing Sicily ahead of Campania and Calabria. Collectively, the three southern regions of Mezzogiorno account for 64.9% of Italy's total municipal financial difficulties.

Historically, Sicily has faced significant structural challenges, having seen 265 such procedures since the introduction of recovery tools through 2025. Nationally, approximately 6.5 million Italians reside in municipalities undergoing financial crisis procedures, representing roughly one in nine citizens.
