Sicily fire safety concerns lead to call for new fire station and arson arrest

In Enna province, the provincial public‑function secretariat of the CGIL, chaired by Alfredo Schilirò, submitted an urgent request for a dedicated fire‑brigade detachment in Catenanuova. The appeal cites a series of recent fires, suspected to be arson‑related, that have struck the Agira‑Nissoria area and border zones, and notes the difficulty of reaching these remote municipalities with existing fire‑service units based in Enna, Leonforte and Nicosia.

In Paternò, Catania, police arrested a 35‑year‑old man accused of deliberately igniting his sister’s car, causing a vehicle fire that threatened nearby parked cars and a building. Investigators linked the act to ongoing family disputes and prior death threats, and also seized a modified air‑soft rifle and a replica Colt M4 during a search of the suspect’s home.
