Sicily fire safety and response

Overview

The fire‑safety challenge in Enna province persists. The CGIL’s public‑function secretariat, led by Alfredo Schilirò, reiterated its urgent request for a dedicated fire‑brigade detachment in Catenanuova, citing a string of recent blazes in the Agira‑Nissoria area that are widely suspected to be arson‑related and the difficulty of reaching these remote towns with existing units.

Police in Paternò arrested a 35‑year‑old man accused of deliberately setting his sister’s car ablaze, seizing a modified air‑soft rifle and a replica Colt M4 during the search, underscoring the ongoing arson threat.

Regional assessor Giusi Savarino visited Sicily’s permanent Unified Operations Room, praising its camera‑based monitoring network and the coordinated effort of the Forest Corps, seasonal workers, civil‑protection volunteers and firefighters. The system enabled rapid identification of fire sources in recent incidents at San Vito Lo Capo and Modica, and tighter penalties under the Meloni government were credited with deterring further attacks.

Michele Catanzaro, president of the Democratic Party group at the regional health service, continued to criticise the regional administration for delays and insufficient preventive measures, noting that 98 % of the season’s fires are arson‑linked and urging the Schifani‑led government to act more decisively.

Regional politician Cateno De Luca entered the debate, denouncing the town of Sciacca and using the occasion to recruit two councilors to his “Sud chiama Nord” movement while reaffirming his ambition to become regional president. Earlier, De Luca and allies attempted a mass resignation from the Sicilian Assembly, a move that ultimately failed.
