Sicily Fires: Assessor Giusi Savarino Praises Unified Operations Center

Regional assessor for Territory and Environment Giusi Savarino visited Sicily's permanent Unified Operations Room and thanked the Forest Corps, seasonal workers, civil‑protection volunteers and firefighters for their nonstop work as the island coped with a red‑alert fire risk. The centre’s monitoring system, bolstered by cameras across the region, allowed rapid identification of fire sources, coordination of responses and containment of flames, limiting damage to the Mediterranean scrubland.

Savarino highlighted recent incidents in San Vito Lo Capo and Modica where suspected arsonists were pinpointed within hours. She noted that recently tightened penalties under the Meloni government make it increasingly difficult for would‑be arsonists to act with impunity, reinforcing the role of the unified command in protecting people and the environment.
