Sicily fuel prices surge to Italy’s highest levels, Codacons urges government action

Data from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, analysed by consumer group Codacons and updated to late June 2026, show that Sicily has the highest fuel prices in the country. The average self‑service gasoline price in the region is €1.828 per litre, compared with the national average of €1.811, while diesel reaches €1.913 per litre versus €1.895 nationally. The price gap, although seemingly small per litre, translates into a significant extra cost for thousands of commuters in the Etna‑area provinces such as Catania, Giarre, Acireale and others, where private cars are often the only viable transport due to limited public‑transport options and steep terrain.

Codacons secretary Francesco Tanasi blasted the situation, stating, “It is incomprehensible that, despite the fall in international oil prices, consumers do not see any benefit at the pump.” The group called on the Italian government to intervene urgently, tighten controls along the fuel supply chain and improve price transparency, arguing that the rising cost of gasoline and diesel is a “double tax” on Sicilian households and businesses.

International oil benchmarks have fallen, with Brent under $72 per barrel and WTI below $70, a fact Codacons says should allow for lower domestic pump prices.
