Sicily health officials begin talks on mental health staffing

The Regional Department of Health in Sicily has entered the operational phase of discussions with the Regional Movement of Mental Health Associations. Following an initial meeting with Health Assessor Marcello Caruso, a technical committee has convened to address staffing shortages within the mental health departments of provincial health agencies.

The committee aims to compare current personnel levels against ministerial parameters to establish new regional standards for mental health services. To address immediate shortages, officials have approved a freeze on transferring funds away from mental health profiles and have authorized hiring increases of up to 50 percent per position, which will be followed by public competitions.

Separately, political debate has emerged regarding the potential reorganization of the Sicilian healthcare system. The Five Star Movement has criticized the regional government, led by Renato Schifani, for considering the abolition of the nine provincial health agencies (ASP) in favor of a single regional entity. The movement claims this proposal is a delayed adoption of their own political platform.
