Sicily mental health service staffing shortages
Overview
In the Milazzo–Lipari area of Sicily, families reported critical delays in child and adolescent neuropsychiatry services. Regional deputy Matteo Sciotto raised inquiries into the situation, noting that wait times for specialist evaluations could reach one year due to severe staff shortages in the Giammoro service area.
In response, the Sicilian Regional Department of Health entered discussions with mental health associations to address personnel shortages within provincial health agencies. A technical committee was convened to establish new regional standards by comparing current staffing levels to ministerial parameters. To mitigate immediate issues, officials approved a freeze on transferring funds away from mental health roles and authorized hiring increases of up to 50 percent per position, to be followed by public competitions.
