Health authorities in Sicily are addressing blood and plasma supply needs through both urgent appeals and technological upgrades. In Catania, the Policlinico Rodolico Transfusion Service has issued an appeal for blood donations following a significant summer decline across Italy. This shortage impacts critical treatments for oncology, thalassemia, and surgical patients, with a specific high demand for O Rh positive blood.

In Siracusa, the Asp is expanding its plasma collection capabilities through apheresis. The agency has acquired new automated plasmaferesis equipment for ten locations to increase efficiency, data management, and donor comfort. This initiative aims to strengthen self-sufficiency in producing plasma-derived medicines such as albumin and immunoglobulins. The Asp reported reaching the national target of 18 kilograms of plasma per 1,000 inhabitants.
