Health authorities in Sicily are implementing new measures to increase pediatric vaccination rates following a decline in coverage and a recent fatal case of diphtheria in Palermo.

In Catania, the ASP (Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale) is strengthening cooperation with schools, educational services, and local municipalities to support families through the vaccination process. To facilitate access, vaccination clinics will allow walk-ins without appointments for children born in 2024, 2025, and 2026. For those preferring appointments, wait times are expected to be between 7 and 15 days.

Regionally, the Sicilian Health Department has issued directives to recover vaccination coverage for children aged zero to six. New measures include opening vaccination centers from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and enhancing services in community hubs. The initiative involves pediatricians and includes contacting families of children with incomplete vaccination cycles for informative interviews to rebuild trust and ensure public safety.
