Childhood vaccination crisis in Sicily

Overview

Sicily is addressing declining childhood vaccination rates and a diphtheria emergency in Palermo. Reports indicate that approximately 15% of children in the region are unvaccinated, prompting calls from the association Asnas for increased investment in local health services and parental outreach rather than relying solely on sanctions.

In response to the health crisis, which included the death of a four-year-old child from diphtheria, the regional government has considered implementing vaccinations directly in schools. The Flc Cgil Sicilia union has expressed support for this approach to simplify the process for families.

Following a regional alert, the Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Enna has intensified its immunization campaign for children aged 0 to 6. To reach the World Health Organization’s recommended 95% threshold, the ASP is utilizing 16 centers across Enna, Agira, Piazza Armerina, and Nicosia that allow for administration without appointments. Healthcare workers and pediatricians are also conducting direct outreach to families with incomplete immunization records.

Expanding these efforts, the Sicilian Health Department has issued directives to recover coverage for children aged zero to six. In Catania, the ASP is strengthening cooperation with schools, educational services, and local municipalities. New measures include opening vaccination centers from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and enhancing services in community hubs. To facilitate access, clinics will allow walk-ins without appointments for children born in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Additionally, pediatricians are conducting informative interviews with families of children with incomplete vaccination cycles to rebuild trust and ensure public safety.
